Exploring the ethics of street casting, Akoka and Gueret’s Cannes Un Certain Regard Award winner questions the degree of exploitation in filmmaking that thrives off the authenticity and spontaneity of young ensembles in a film-withina-film. Making his debut feature about troubled kids, a Flemish director comes to the French suburbs to find non-professional actors, who are seemingly cast by personality type and real-life hardship, but impress with their lived-in performances. What the shifting dynamics on set reveal is the price paid for such ‘social realism’.
