A break from the direct cinema style established over half a century, master documentarian Frederick Wiseman delivers his first true fiction film, focusing on just one woman – Sophia Tolstoy, the long-suffering wife of the legendary author Leo Tolstoy. Interspersed with poetic imagery of tidal uproars and floral blossom, Sophia confesses her intense flares of passion, anguish, and rage in her troubled marriage, through affecting monologues adapted from original letters and diaries. Crafted in the same reserved, unobtrusive manner, Wiseman’s drama is its own form of documentary, replete with gentle humanism.
